What You Can (and Can’t) Drive on a Regular UK Driving Licence
Legal and safe driving is more than what the Highway Code requires. Have you ever thought about what the different types of categories on the back of your UK driving licence mean? What are they? What are they for? Are they a sign of driving restrictions? Given that they are something most of us carry with us all day, it’s a shock to realise that we know nothing about these codes. That’s why we’ve put together an exhaustive list of the confusing categories of driving licences and codes, so you know what you can and can’t drive once you’ve passed your driving test, and which ones you’ll need to take an additional test to complete.

Why is it so important to check my driving licence?
Around 75% of adults in the UK have a driving licence. That’s a lot of drivers! With commutes, road trips and long-distance journeys becoming more frequent and frequent, it’s important to be aware of the validity, personal information and conditions on your licence.

Standard UK driving category for licences
Category AM

This means that you can drive three or two-wheeled vehicles with a maximum speed of between 15.5 and 28 mph. However, you will also need to pass a basic test (CBT).

This category also includes quads with a maximum design speed of between 15.5 and 28 mph and a weight of no more than 350 kilograms (excluding electric vehicle batteries).

Category B

To drive any vehicle in category B, this is the category you will need. You can drive vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kg maximum weight and with up to 8 passenger seats.

If you are over 21, Category B means you can drive motor tricycles with a power output of more than 15 kW. You also have the legal ability to drive category motor tricycles that meet the standards for Cat A1 or A (and when you are physically disabled).

Category F

If your license is category F, that’s all the basic ones do: you can drive a tractor. That means you can get behind the wheel of a steerable tractor without any restrictions!

Category K

This type of license allows you to drive a pedestrian-controlled vehicle, which is a self-propelled vehicle that you can walk behind to operate. For example, a lawnmower.

Category Q

In category Q you can drive two-wheeled vehicles with an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc and a maximum design speed not exceeding 15.5mph.

Types of driving licences you may hold
Category B1

If you have category B1 of your driving licence You can drive motor vehicles with four wheels weighing up to 400 kg unladen, or 550 kilograms in case they are specifically designed to transport goods, this is typical of the old driving licences.

Category B + E

If you passed the test before 1 January 1997, you can drive a vehicle that has an extra trailer that exceeds the standard weight limit of 3,500kg to 8,250kg. If you passed the test after 1 January 1997, you must take a second test to be able to tow loads heavier than 3,500kg.

Category B cars

In lieu of a category B licence This means that you are restricted to driving automatic cars only and are not permitted to drive a manual vehicle.

Category P

This is an old classification that is still present on some licenses. It refers to two-wheeled vehicles with a design speed of no more than 31 mph and an engine capacity of no more than 50 cc. In more recent licenses, the category has been merged with the AM classification.

Driving licence categories for which an additional exam is required
Category A

With category A it is possible to drive motorcycles with a power greater than 35 kW and a power/weight ratio greater than 0.2 kg/kW.

Category A1
If you are a member of category A1, you can drive light motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 12 litres.
